I WAS A TRAFFIC BABE
A Client Confession from Marya Fletcher, Comma Music

Now, that it’s over, the truth can be told. I hate being stuck in traffic. I can barely read a map. I’m always getting lost. But that didn’t stop me from becoming “Traffic Babe of the Day” at an alternative rock radio station.
Here in Chicago, Q101’s “The Morning Fix” has been inviting listeners in to do the weather
and traffic from 5:30 til 9:15. On a whim, I called up the station and they invited me to come down.
If I'd had the time to think it over prior to my scheduled date, I might have backed out... However, the Monday morning after I signed up, I got a panicked call from the station: the guy they had scheduled for this morning canceled, and would I be interested in doing it this morning? I said “Yes,” before he finished the sentence. Oh, yeah, I also fessed up to it being my birthday.
I arrived at Q101 bearing gifts: Krispy Kremes, Champagne and the fixings for Mimosas (I'm a rep, dammit!). Card-carrying ham that I am, I had a blast. It was insane fun. And when they asked about my day-job I told the listeners that our firm, Comma Music, makes really hip music for advertising and film. They looked at me with that same mix of shock and envy most people do when they realize how cool that job must be. Then one of the DJs said, "Hey! I want a them song!"
Savvy marketing gal that I am (wink wink), I said "DONE." Q101 invited me back the next day.
