LOS ANGELES, CA, April 9, 2008 - PrimalScream Music - headed by Creative Director/Executive Producer Nicole Dionne - created six original songs for a massive rebrand of the Starz TV network. The "Shine" concept, which evolves Starz into an evocative entertainment brand, was unveiled this past week on all Starz channels.
Dionne and her team worked closely with Starz Entertainment, and with Troika Design Group, which was brought on to establish the overarching Starz identity and execute it across all ten of its HD and SD premium cable channels.
"Nicole's talent as a creative producer was evident from the moment we started working together," said Reid Thompson, Creative Director, Troika Design Group. "She guided the creative process much in the same way a producer would a recording artist, shaping the vision and tone of the music. She understood the positive message we wanted to convey with the ‘Shine' positioning, and translated that into an ‘album' of original Starz music tracks, each one unique and inspired."
"Starz wanted to push the envelope, wanted something new, something we have not heard before," explained Dionne, who said the sensibilities of Starz execs was a perfect match for PrimalScream. "We try to create the best of both worlds, with original songs that sound like they were licensed, that you'd want to hear this on your iPod; at the same time, it moves and represents the brand and the visuals."
While an animatic helped to convey the visual direction of the rebrand, Dionne used emotion as a starting point for the musical process. "What is the emotion that you want people to have when they tune in to your channels?" she wondered, "and what's the scope of that emotion?"
As it turned out, the network was open to eliciting a wide range of emotion, as their channels offer a variety of entertainment programming. This inspired Dionne to create tracks rooted in a number of styles: punk, eclectic gospel, rock, indie alt, pop, and urban.
"We came to Nicole and PrimalScream with a different idea to do our network branding music," said Starz Executive Director, Creative Services, Kandy Barry. "We didn't want a single theme of music. Instead, we wanted to have a collection of songs to use across all the channels to represent the brand in a fresh, contemporary way. Nicole created a soundtrack for our brand, a wonderful, wide palette of music that in the end unifies all the channels."
Dionne presented ideas to the client, and when everyone related to the same core song, that song acted as a road map for the entire musical journey. "We drew on many resources to craft these tracks," Dionne said. "I brought in a really great punk band, a musical random sound maker, a pop music producer, a metal band..." Dionne collaborated with these artists for two solid weeks and challenged them to experiment, to venture beyond the root genres, so that each captured the emotion of the core song. The result was a selection of tracks that not only stand apart from one another, but created their own sub-genres as well.
"The through-line for us is authenticity," Dionne stated. "If we are known for something, it's probably for producing artists the way they would be produced for an album. So we look for people with a voice. Some of the people we worked with, it's like their ears are tuned to another planet, it's magical and it was perfect for 'Shine'."
"Starz' response validated my belief and what I have believed since I started PrimalScream," Dionne concluded, "that pictures can speak a thousand words, and music can speak a million. The music is timeless, because you don't have a memory associated with it. Each track is novel, and your memory is about the product - and the association is between a great product and great music."
