With "I Love The Whole World," his new global spot for Discovery Channel, director James Rouse of OUTSIDER USA takes us on a journey of various perspectives, looking at the world through the eyes of the channel's many stars, astronauts, surfers, soldiers, Stephen Hawking...and more. Conclusion: it's awesome.
Notes from the set: "It started last summer, it was a long three-month process" says Rouse. "The song, obviously, is integral to the spot and we ultimately settled on 'Boom Dee Ya Da', which is a campfire song. It's catchy. Plus, there's a sense of fun in the shoot every day, something about singing brings a happiness to people, when you film people singing there is just happiness and fun in the whole process.
Filming the Zulus was an amazing experience. I was a little worried before hand about how they would take to singing boom dee ya da, rather than their traditional tribal waltzes. But they threw themselves into it, they loved it and did it with such passion."
Rouse filmed a host of Discovery Channel stars, including: The Alaskan King Crab Fishermen of Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs' Mike Rowe, Bear Grylls of Man vs Wild, MythBusters' Adam and Jamie, Mack from Future Weapons and Bruce Parry of Going Tribal.
"It was charming working with a lot of the personalities, though I wasn't familiar with them before hand. Josh Burnstein (of a soon-to-be-announced program) and Bear in particular were a joy to work with," the director recalls. "Since their shows are more of a documentary and adventure-style, they weren't familiar with the idea of a multiple-take, commercial filmmaking process, complete with full crew and lights, but they were totally fascinated by it and really enjoyed it.
For a brand to celebrate the world without seeming self-serving is unique, but as Discovery Channel celebrates the planet every day they have the right to ask others to do so with them. I hope it brings out a warm fuzziness in people."

Hey - good stuff here. If you're into MythBusters, you will definitely like my buddy's reality TV pilot called Crash Test. They use pro stunt experts to recreate accidents to see who is guilty and who is innocent. It is being shown on Tues April 27th (tomorrow!) on Spike TV at 11pm ET so check it out or set your DVR to help my friend! He would probably even be happy to write a post for you to discuss Crash Test - mail me if you're interested. Thanks!
