When Einar of Union Editorial told us how excited he was about the process of cutting Corona "Finishing Touch," he never could have guessed the impact the spot would have on the world of academia. In response to our recent post on Professor Bob Stern's inclusion of the spot in his lectures, we have heard from Bill Chadwick, an Associate Professor at Oregon State University.
"I actually used that Corona ad to start a public lecture that was given at a local brew pub," Chadwick writes. "The Marine Science Center here is starting this up as "Science on Tap" - science presentations in an informal setting aimed at the general public. The ad was a perfect way to relate underwater volcanoes to beer!"
In addition to his role at the University, Professor Chadwick works with NOAA's (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, and, over the past few years has worked extensively exploring underwater volcanoes in the western Pacific:
"One of the most exciting developments is that, for the first time, we've observed underwater eruptions via a remotely operated vehicle," says Chadwick. "There are a few details I might have done differently in 'Finishing Touch,' but what's remarkable about this Corona commercial is what a good job they did visualizing the underwater eruption. It's very realistic - which we know because now we have a real one to compare it to!"
Following Professor Stern's lead, we may have to create a new category on our site: Edumercials
